Japanese martial arts

Compared to other countries of the world, Japan is an island and remained isolated to a large extent by the happenings in the rest of the world. This lead to the evolution of a unique culture and martial arts.

The martial arts developed in Japan can be categorised into 2 major groups.
  • Martial arts that use weapons like Swords while fighting the opponent
  • Martial arts that do not use any accessories to battle the adversary. These can be further subdivided into Methologies
  1. Direct attack:  where the opponent directly applies a force to overcome an opponent. Physical strength and technique are important and determine the winner.
  2. Soft method: Indirect application of force which either avoids the attack of the opponent or redirects the energy to overcome the opponent.

The martial arts can also be classified into 2 categories based on the period when they were first developed.
  • Koryu or traditional martial arts they were developed for use in war.
  • Gendai budō (or the Modern way) which evolved after the Meiji Restoration in 1866 and are used mainly for self defense.
